Ch 60 "The Line"

Do you guys think that this might be what Melville was talking about at the end of Chapter 60?

"All men are enveloped in whale-lines."

My conjecture

The fates remind me of the imagery of the process of harpooning a whale and tiring the whale out until they can kill it.

Maybe that's the allegory.

The hempen rope is like the thread of life. The whale is bound to it and so is the boat and crew. The mate has to determine how much rope to let out and at what rate. Remember when Stubb had to hold onto the rope as it went through his hands--and burned them (he dropped the cloth thing)?

Finally, they cut short the life of the whale.

...though this is all just a hypothesis.

the fates

The Goddess of Necessity, Themis, brought forth three lovely daughters, known as the Moirai (Fates). All living things must eventually submit to these divine daughters of Zeus and Themis. Their names are: Koltho (Clotho), Lakhesis (Lachesis) and Atropos.
Klotho spins the thread of life, Lakhesis determines the length of the thread and Atropos cuts the thread when the proper time has come for death. They are also called the Moirai to denote their descent from Moira, the original goddess of Fate. They are not to be confused with the Furies, who are the daughters of Nyx (Night). They laugh at our feeble attempts to cheat them because they always prevail. They are also known as the Moiras or Keras.
They are often confused with the Roman goddesses, the Morae.

Whaling history presentation

To Jessica,
What do you think about dividing the presentation into the history of European/world whaling and the history of North American whaling?

Oldest Starbucks shop in the world

Today, I happened to be in Seattle so I went to the first Starbucks.
It's at Pike's Place Market.
I thought about asking somebody about the name, but the place was packed.

(If you're wondering, that is Moby Dick I am holding.)

I don't know if anyone else is as crazy about architecture as I am, but the new Washington Mutual Tower, a couple blocks from Pike's Place, was just completed:

Peleg and Bildad

Peleg is known as division in the bible because the Earth was divided during his time and from his father, Eber, came two races. Bildad is one of Job's three friends. His purpose is to consolidate, but ends up as being an accuser when he asks what Job did to deserve God's wrath.
